Israel’s Technion and Cornell to create environmentally pioneering technology campus in New York City

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has announced the building of a technology university campus in the city.  The Israel Institute of Technology (Technion) and Cornell University submitted their proposal to lead the campus and were selected due to the impressive track record of these institutions in science and business, and for the vision of their plan.

The NYCTech Campus will utilize advanced technologies to create one of the greenest campuses in the world. The plan is for the campus to harvest as much energy from solar power and geothermal wells as it consumes. The campus will include a solar array that will generate 1.8 megawatts at daily peak and a 400 well geothermal field, which uses the constant temperature of the earth to cool buildings in the summer and heat them in the winter. The campus’s Built Environment hub will also help develop the environmental technologies that it will use.
